Little Free Libraries/Libros Libres is a literacy and community design initiative in Dallas that uses free book exchanges to build community and promote a culture of reading. Part of the Little Free Library movement (www.littlefreelibrary.org), these small neighborhood book shelters operate under the guiding principle of “take a book, leave a book.” All libraries are publicly accessible and books are free.

Free outdoor libraries are an increasingly popular tool for building vibrant, connected public spaces. In Dallas, the Little Free Libraries/Libros Libres program has brought together local artists, designers, and community leaders to design and build a range of public outdoor book exchanges in West Dallas and South Dallas/Fair Park, with six more to be installed throughout south Oak Cliff in spring 2015. The design and function of the libraries are reflective of the communities in which they are installed. An emphasis on participatory design and programming at each step of the process makes this program unique.

In spring 2015, we are meeting with community leaders, hosts, and stewards in south Oak Cliff to plan and design the second cycle of Little Free Libraries, to be constructed in May. Please get in touch with us if you'd like to be involved!
